The BMW R850R and R1100R were both naked and funky roadsters. They were
extremely practical. However, the R’s also offered the rider huge
fun. They had grunty power and odd looks, but life still did not get
any better than that.
The recent replacement of both these machines by the R1150R might
just finally bring BMW to the fore in this growing market.
The 1130cc,
air/oil-cooled, 8v, flat twin engine of the 1150R delivers
impressive power. It is identical to that found on the GS, but is
mysteriously 3bhp down on power. Claimed power is 76,2bhp at
6500rpm, 69,1lb-ft at 5400rpm and a top speed of 119mph can be
reached. The 1150R makes best use of the flat twin. The bulky
cylinders protruding uniquely from the sides of the R not only gives
the R an intimidating character, but also doubles as hand and leg
warmers.
Rear suspension is by a Paralever swing-arm, with spring and damper
and is adjustable by preload and rebound. The front is by a Telever,
swing-arm, fork and damper, which is unique but not adjustable. An
anti-dive system also provides riding-support – given that it
takes some getting used to.
BMW’s braking and suspension normally works well together. The
1150R should be no exception. The R’s Evo braking-system is
similar to those fitted to other new BMW models. However, ABS is not
standard. Two 320mm, 4-piston calliper, discs at the front and a
282mm, 2-piston calliper, disc at the rear, does the job.
Another of BMW’s signature traits is that of comfort. The BMW
R1150R features numerous handy and civilised extras. |
